Depending on your travel plans, after hitting Montana you may meander into South Dakota. Guess what’s in South Dakota? Mount Rushmore! The parking fee is $11.00 per vehicle. Rapid City, SD is located about a half hour from Mount Rushmore, and finding a hotel room can be tricky, but not impossible. I recommend making reservations in advance, but if you’re more of a fly by the seat of your pants let’s have an adventure type person, then go you and good luck! Everybody in Rapid City is going to tell you to make sure to see the Evening Lighting Ceremony. (Heed their advice.) People will also give you many great suggestions for places to eat, if you go to one of the fancier ones be prepared to wait for a while before being seated. (I only mention this because the lighting ceremony starts at dusk and you don’t want to miss it.)
Only about 30 miles southwest of Rapid City lies Custer State Park. You have to drive through. (Meaning, no, it’s not an option. You have to.) It contains one of the largest free-roaming buffalo herds. It’s a scenic drive through the Black Hills with buffalo. What more could you want?
If you go about another 10 miles southwest of Rapid City, keep your eyes open because you can spot Crazy Horse Memorial from the highway.
And now you can check three more items off.
